I am a fan.

Posted: October 31, 2010 in Randomness

an enthusiastic devotee, follower, or admirer of a sport, pastime, celebrity, etc.

I am a fan. It doesn’t matter of what team. It doesn’t matter where I attended college, how many games I attend, or how much money I spend on paraphernalia. I am a fan and I want my teams to win. Every time. I want it done right, though; I don’t want a flash in the pan. I don’t want to be great for two years at the expense of having to rebuild for the next 5 years. I want steady, sustained success. I understand that there are lots of teams and they can’t all win every year – it’s cyclical. Yes, a chance to win the championship from time to time is nice, but I recognize that long-term
consistency is far more impressive. I’ve learned that it really is just a game, as much as I love it, as excited as I will get watching it, as much as I believe sports enriches our lives – there are just so many more important things in life.

I am a fan. It makes me sick when I listen to people who profess to be fans bash their favorite team, the coach, the organization as a whole because they’re good, but not “good enough.” Your team hasn’t had a winning season in multiple years? Fine. Your team wallows near the bottom of the standing every year? Fine. Your team has no direction and changes coaches as often as most of us take showers? Fine. You have my permission to bash away – your team sucks. BUT your team wins? Yet you want to complain because the grass isn’t as green as it is for fans of team XYZ? I think you should consider becoming a bandwagon jumper. Just attach yourself to the hot team that year and you won’t ever have to worry about whether you’re backing the best again. You also won’t have to endure being supportive of your team when they face some adversity or a less-than-stellar season.

I am a fan. I complain when my team performs badly. I get upset when they have a bad year. That doesn’t mean they suck and it certainly doesn’t mean that I need to spew venom about my team. I mean: I’m a fan right? A FAN! I love my teams, support my teams through good years and bad years. Why? I believe in their commitment to winning. I believe in their commitment to building long-term, sustained success. If you honestly doubt that commitment from your team, instead of being a hater you should consider finding a different team to (not) support. The reality is that you’re never going to be happy.

I am a fan. I am a fan of life, of living it and enjoying it. I am a fan of family, friends, food and wine. I am a fan of laughing, loving, fun and caring. I am a fan of sports, movies, gadgets and all around geekery. I am a fan of all these things and more, because they bring me joy. If you claim to be a fan of something that angers you and causes you distress, why are you still a fan? Maybe it’s time to move on to being a fan of something new? Life is too short…why not be a fan?

I am a fan. Maybe you should try it?
